Olshaker Emergency physicians care for a high volume of patients who are critically ill or injured, and many times that number of patients appear well but signs or symptoms may represent less obvious life or limb threats. The practice conditions are challenging with increasing crowding and boarding, higher patient volumes, lack of ongoing relationships with patients, and extremely high expectations for zero errors. These challenges are coupled with increasing pressure to decrease use of costly imaging and other testing while simultaneously lowering admission rates.
